Quick Overview

Philadelphia Photographer Volume VII edited by Edward L. Wilson, copyright 1870 by Benerman & Wilson in Philadelphia...this book is a compilation of the the 1870-1872 monthly edition of the Philadelphia Photographer journal bound together in one volume. The book has frontispiece photographic plates at the beginning of each month done by pioneering photographers. Included in these photos is a photograph of Samuel Morse by Abraham Bogardus as well as what appears to be a self portrait by Bogardus. Also photos of black Americans on a farm, children, landscapes, etc.

This large book measures over 4 inches thick. Overall it is in very good condition. The first frontispiece page has some loose but is included as pictured. The april 1870 (no. 76) frontispiece photo is missing, looks to have never been included - the page is marked H.J. Newton New York Tea Dry Process. All other plates seem to be included. The book is intact with some looseness of the binding and wear to the cover and spine as pictured. The book has some expected foxing, but it does not seem to affect the plates themselves.

This rare book has articles on early cameras and emerging photographic processes from the very earliest days of photography as well as articles about photographers and companies in the industry at the time. This is an incredibly scarce book that has amazing early photos and would be a great addition to anyone's photograph collection.
