| This is a large lot of diaries primarily written by J.C. Bain and other papers from his family from Lawsonham (Madison Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania). This group contains 49 diaries, many of them written in tiny script in one year planners, miscellaneous paperwork and deeds. Diaries and ephemera date back into the early 1870's, possibly before. The contents of this offering were found in the attic of a Bain family member in DuBois, Pennsylvania.
This lot includes, but is not limited to:
- 49 hand-written diaries from 1870's - 1960's.
- 12 (at least) family deeds.
- 1870's Bain / Lawson family Bible.
- 1870's and up, letters and correspondence.
- Certificates & letters from Pennsylvania Railroad and Postmaster General.
J.C. Bain was born in 1850 and had a hardware store in Lawsonham. Bain married Caroline Lawson, whose family Lawsonham was named after. The family bible is full of newspaper clippings and other ephemera related to the family, including deaths and births. The diaries have thousands and thousands of pages of history of the family and the area.
Photos show the majority of the contents of this lot, but there is a bit that isn't pictured. Many of the little diaries are written in advertising day planners that have some great ads in them and on the covers from different oil and other companies.
This is one of the largest groups of newly found info on Clarion County that you are likely to find. Until now, these papers and books haven't seen the light of day in decades and have never before been out of the Bain family's possession.
Update: We have found another whole box of ephemera relating to the Bain and Lawson families. Included in this are some old photographs, some of the attributed, an old store ledge from Lawsonham, lots of papers and a significant amount of newer circa 1940's Bain info. Some of these items include an autograph book from DuBois High School in the early 1940's and two large scrapbooks from the DuBois area from the same time. None of these items have been pictured, but it is a box full. |
