An authentic 1860s Civil War era miniature leather wallet-style photograph album, featuring an embossed black leather cover with a fold-over tuck flap and gilt "Photographs" title. Contains a total of 23 original period photographic images, comprising 14 Carte de Visite (CDV) photographs and 9 ferrotype tintypes (including gem-sized portraits mounted in embossed decorative paper mats). The album is extensively identified with period pencil and ink inscriptions belonging to the prominent Whitney and Warner families of Humphrey, Cattaraugus County, New York.
The premier highlight is a standing portrait of Charles E. Whitney in shell jacket uniform displaying New York State / Federal military buttons and star insignia. Historically, Charles E. Whitney served in Company I of the famous 154th New York Volunteer Infantry (known as the "Hardtack Regiment"), recruited out of Cattaraugus County. Whitney experienced some of the war's harshest service: he was captured in action twice—first during the flank attack at the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863, and later during the Atlanta Campaign—surviving confinement in the notorious Confederate prisoner-of-war camp at Andersonville, Georgia, where his kept wartime diary remains a published historical record.
Surrounding images depict members of the Whitney, Warner, and related families in fine mid-19th-century attire. Complete with original gilt-edged pages, displaying honest period handling wear to the leather exterior corners and spine, with clean photo windows and strong binding.
